Unleashing the Wolf is set fifty years in the future where government social spending consumes budgets and causes governments to run huge deficits. Government borrowing dominates capital markets, crowding out private financing. However, they know that if they stop the programs it will generate tremendous social instability, which could foment riots and potential class warfare. The effects ripple throughout society, culture, and the economy. With their budgets consumed with social spending, governments can no longer maintain effective security and innovation stagnates. Large, global corporations called megas, therefore create their own private military forces to provide their own security. These forces not only protect corporate sites and resources, but the corporations often contract out the forces to other groups in civil wars, insurgencies and chaotic situations.

Two very different groups come to the realization the situation must change.
The Consortium seeks to eliminate the taxation, regulation and financial constraints on growth. They are far less concerned with means and understand that the bloated cities are the main obstacle to government reform. The lead meaga, SBM, decides to restructure its private military force to use to force change and destabilize governments. While they have the best of the private armies, they know its leadership is principled and would not support their plan. Therefore, SBM springs a trap on it to eliminate much of the leadership while preserving its equipment and many of the soldiers. They also decide to use nuclear weapons from the old Soviet Union to destroy ten key cities in an attempt to foment turbulence throughout the world and to eliminate many of the core problems they see.

The Society for Enlightenment claims a lineage dating back to the Crusades. The founders, disgusted at the excesses of the Crusades and armed with knowledge recovered from the Islamic world that preserved it after the fall of the Roman Empire, vow to create a civilization based on knowledge and respect for human rights. Since then, they labored behind the scenes trying to steer governments and leaders to their vision. By 2060, however, the Society’s leaders realize they can no longer work behind the scenes and decide to create a single world government. Like the Consortium, they seek to undermine the governments, but are concerned about both their methods and the consequences of their actions.

The Wolf Brigade, commanded by Colonel James Anderson, stands between the two groups. It is SMB’s private military force. When SBM gives them a seeming simple mission to eliminate a guerrilla movement threatening key mines and offers to sell the brigade to its leadership, the Wolves realize something is wrong. As they gather intelligence and work on the buyout, one of their staff offers suggests he may have a group that could help the Wolves with financing. The group turns out to be the Society and the Wolves are brought into a complex vortex of political and military drama.

The book is a blend of fast paced military action, political and social commentary and high finance. With the exception of the Wolves, all of the parties have conflicted motives and potentially troublesome ideas. Even the Society, which claims to want freedom and liberty, has conflicting ideas about how to achieve its goal and a projected government structure that does not match traditional democratic ideals. Anderson and his team must sort through the claims and ideas and make difficult choices. Along the way, they have to fight three major battles, to include a large raid in Siberia to destroy the nuclear weapons the Consortium wants to use against the cities.

The book ends with the Consortium licking its wounds, the Society ready to pursue its empire, and the Wolf Brigade wondering whether it can support the Society. This situation sets the stage for Volume II, Quest for the Crown.

Unleashing the Wolf Crusaders' Vow Book 1 eBook Jeffery Marshall Reviews

This book was a nonstop read from beginning to end. I could not put it down and I wish I could find more books by this author. Considering this book was written over 20 years ago, it is still very relevant as the world is moving closer to this. This should be a movie.
Very entertaining. Takes you into not just the battle but the planning. It is spooky how much things in the book are like what is happening today. A big thumbs up. Jeffery needs to get cracking on the next one.
wonderful presentation. a little heavy on military terms however
